The Seasonal Festivities Continue In London
Christmas may be over, but don’t let that stop you from visiting London this January. It’s still full of festive spirit and some great winter attractions.
Even though the stunning New Year’s Day parade may have been and gone in the capital for 2017, it doesn’t necessarily signal an end to London’s seasonal festivities. Far from it. There are still plenty of magical winter attractions to experience which make London one of the best cities in the world to visit at this time of year.
No-one loves a bargain as much as the Brits and London’s stores are full of discounts and offers. The January sales have been in full throttle since before Christmas, but there are still plenty of bargains to be picked up. Shopping in London isn’t just about the items you purchase – it’s an event in itself. You can spend the day popping in and out of Oxford Street’s famous department stores such as Selfridges, John Lewis and House of Fraser. For the budget-conscious, the Primark superstore is a must-visit. Covent Garden is home to hundreds of boutique shops and is the perfect place to meander around, in-between cups of coffee, a quick pint in a cosy London pub or perhaps an early supper before catching a show in Theatreland. Westfield Stratford or Westfield London are also worth heading to if you prefer a shopping centre experience.
Chinese New Year
Get the firecrackers ready and head to Chinatown from the 28th January onwards to watch some spectacular displays of performance art, which are all part of the celebrations for the Chinese New Year and don’t cost a penny. 2017 is the year of the Rooster who will reign for the next 12 months before handing over to the Dog. Visitors can enjoy a colourful parade, lion dances and even a fireworks display which will take place in Trafalgar Square on the 29th January.
Winter Festival At The Southbank
The beautiful authentic Christmas market has left for the year, but there is still plenty going on at the Southbank this January. Check out some circus tricks at NoFit State’s big top tent which will be presenting BIANCO until the 22nd January. Be amazed by a fantastic set of mind-boggling acrobatic performances and circus talents which are all set to live music.
If you fancy showing off some of your own physical skills, then head to the BUMP Rollerdisco which offers an alternative to festive winter skating. Strap on your boots and groove along with special DJs until the 22nd January.
Of course, the Southbank is a beautiful location to wander down at any time of year, thanks to its location next to the Thames. However, you only have a few weeks left to enjoy the Swedish-styled two-storey pop-up lodge which is gracing the area until the 22nd January. If the bitterly cold wind is ruining your stroll along the river, warm up with a cup of spiced cider or some traditional Swedish fare.
Hogwarts In The Snow
Harry Potter fans should travel out to Leavesden near Watford Junction and visit the Warner Bros studio for a special seasonal Hogwarts exhibition which runs until the 29th January. Get up close and personal with a range of props and sets used in the movies – these include feasts in the Great Hall with flaming Christmas puddings as well as treats found in the Gryffindor Common Room.
There’s no reason to let January be a boring month when London still has so many winter celebrations taking place. Having said that, there’s no denying it’s cold. So why not check out London chauffeur services to help get you around the capital in comfort throughout 2017!
